ASUU Elects Chris Piwuna As New President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected a new national president.
His name is Professor Chris Piwuna. He is a Professor of Medicine and a Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.

Before this, Piwuna was the National Vice President of ASUU. He was also the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos. He is taking over from the former ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.

The election took place at ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress. The congress was held on Sunday at the University of Benin in Edo State. Professor Piwuna contested the election with Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi.

Piwuna becomes president at a time when there are talks about a possible strike. This is because of problems like how the Federal Government shared the Earned Academic Allowances.
Other issues include brain drain and other challenges in Nigeria’s university system.

ASUU also elected other officials to join Piwuna in leading the union.
Austen Sado was elected as vice president.
Happiness Uduk is the new financial secretary.
Peter Adamu is the treasurer.
Celestine Aguoru is the investment secretary.
Aisha Bawa is the welfare officer.
Kassim Umar is the internal auditor.

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke served as ASUU’s president from May 30, 2021, to May 11, 2025.
His leadership lasted four years. He was known for opposing the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). He also pushed for better university funding and more independence for universities.

Osodeke was re-elected in May 2023 for a second two-year term. This happened during the 22nd National Delegates Conference at the University of Jos.
